Do You Need a Korean Phone Number as a Tourist? (010 SIM Guide) | KoreaGo
Does a tourist need a Korean 010 phone number, and which SIM plans actually include calls and a number? Data-only vs number-included vs ARC plans — and when you really need one.
Frequently asked questions
Do tourists actually need a Korean phone number?
For most trips, no. With data alone you can use maps, translation, KakaoTalk (over data), and internet calls. You mainly need a Korean number if you must receive Korean SMS or make real phone calls to restaurants, accommodations, or drivers. Decide based on whether your trip actually requires those.
Can a tourist get a Korean 010 number?
Yes — a number-included prepaid SIM activated with your passport gives you a Korean 010 number. However, long-term or postpaid plans and some services require an Alien Registration Card (ARC). Short-term travelers should pick a prepaid SIM that explicitly includes a number (voice + SMS).
Is a data-only eSIM enough for most travelers?
Yes — for maps, search, translation, internet calls, and data-based messengers, a data-only eSIM is enough. But data-only plans have no Korean number, so they can't receive Korean SMS or make regular phone calls. If you need number-based verification, consider a number-included SIM separately.
What's the difference between having a number and SMS verification?
Having a Korean number doesn't guarantee every app verification works. With a number you can usually receive SMS one-time codes (OTP), but the real-name identity check (본인인증) that banks and some apps require only passes if the number is registered in your real name. Whether verification works is covered in detail in our SMS verification guide.
